Dons' musings about O Fallon Mo : FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION

We have all heard this old adage, if we fail to plan, we plan to fail.  Right? But there are other quotes about failure and these will let you know that it is how we look at failure that determines success.  We are hit with a failure mentality every day, as a matter of fact there have been times that I have been ready to throw the TV out the door.  Why didn't I , I am so glad that you ask.  I had two things that stood in my way, 1. The darn thing was to heavy and 2. My WIFE!  So for now I will just play in the rain.  So check these quotes out:

  1. If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.  Anonymous often attributed to Dan Quayle
  2. It is possible to fail in many ways..while to succeed is possible only in one way.  Aristotle
  3. You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.  Beverly Sills
  4. If at first you don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.  Bill Lyon
  5. Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on their environment and especially on their children than the unlived life of the parent.  Carl Jung
  6. Act as if it is impossible to fail.  Dorothea Brande
  7. Men are born to succeed, not fail.  Henry David Thoreau
  8. Don't be discouraged by failure.  It can be a positive experience.  Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, inasmuch as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterwards carefully avoid.  John Keats
  9. If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you.  What we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down.  Mary Pickford
  10. You always pass failure on the way to success.  Mickey Rooney
  11. Success isn't permanent, and failure isn't fatal.  Mike Ditka

Here is to a SUCCESSFUL day!!  Failure is only an option when we accept failure as final.

You're right, we're hit with the failure mentality every day. A key issue is whether or not we accept that mentality as fact -- and deep down I don't think any of us do.

Great quotes Don. #9 and #11 are personaly favorites of mine.

Posted by DJ Swanepoel (Real Estate Wiki) almost 11 years ago

Great post, Don.  Have you read the book "Failing Forward" by John Maxwell?  It is great and really helps us to understand that everyone does a lot of failing.  There are, of course, the old standards we've all heard:  even the best batters can't expect to bat 1.000 - batting consistently over .400 will get you in the Baseball Hall of Fame.  And we've all heard the story about how Michael Jordan couldn't make the varsity team in school, so he worked harder and harder until he was the very best.  This book though, goes into a lot of detail relating to our business and personal lives and really makes you understand the failing forward concept.

Love the quotes, Don!  Here is another one... If winning isn't everything, why do we keep score?

Posted by Lori Coomey (Keller Williams Realty) almost 11 years ago

Don, failure is part of growth and learning but some failure sets you way back financially or failed relationships change your life. So we have to deal with failure of course but I wouldn't wish it necessarily on anyone. Sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise.

Then there's that guy who 'failed' 10000 times.... Oh, and by the way, he invented the light bulb.  As he put it, he never failed; he just found 10000 ways it wouldn't work.

"Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure." -- Thomas A. Edison

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." -- Edison

It's not whether we fail at a particular task, but what we do after that's important. Wallow in it or pick ourselves back up and march on.  Have a great weekend my friend!

Mara,

It is only when we stay down that we truly fail.  As long as we keep getting up we will succeed.

Terri,

You are so right.  Don't stay down, get up and keep moving.

Kate,

We may be facing a "complete failure" of the economic system but, I believe that it will only occur if we stop working on a solution and allow it to happen.  History has proven that we can overcome situations like this and come out stronger on the other side.  But it is not a time to stick our heads in the sand because if we do then our butts are up in the air and we can get them kicked!  The truth is that people are still buying and selling homes and property, maybe not at the same rate they were just a few short years ago but they are still buying and selling!

We can either choose to stay where we are or we can get up  and begin to do something about our current situation.  I choose to do something about my current situation and that is no rah-rah just fact.  I hope that this is the something more that you are looking for.  :-))

Gary,

I agree it is what we do with failure when it happens.  Do we stay down or do we get up and keep on going.  It is not the number of times that you get knocked down but the number of times that you get up.

Thank you my friend for stopping in and commenting, always a pleasure to hear from you.

Thomas Edison is a wonderful example of failure turned to success and not giving up.  Look at all of the opportunities that he had and he was determined not to give up.

Once i was in litigation with an attorney and I was representing myself. The lawsuit dealt with probate, real estate, statute of limitations, and family. It was complex but I understood all the facets of the deal. Anyway, one day the attorney who sued me wanted to settle. Before he asked me to settle, I had filed a counter-claim. He told me, "Randy we should just sit down and settle this whole thing." I told him, "Sure! Give me $50,000 and drop the lawsuit and I will drop the counter-claim  against you!" He laughed and told me, "Yeah, right!? What are the chances of me GIVING you $50,000?" I told him "Fifty-Fifty!" Then he laughed again! Then i explained, "You will give me one of ttwo answers, either YES or NO. That is why my odds are Fifty-fifty!" Then he said, "No Randy. Your odds are one in million!" Then i told him, "What would my chances be if I didn't ask for the $50,000?"

We ended up going to trial. But, yeah, it is good to have a positive attitude, especially in a negative world.
