Dons' musings about O Fallon Mo : Rubber Eraser Day

Rubber Eraser Day

Rubber Eraser Day

EraserFor all those prone to making a mistake Rubber Eraser Day will always fall on April 15th……………….

Make no mistake about it; Rubber Eraser Day celebrates the invention of erasers. We all make mistakes. I thought I did once and then found out I didn’t.  This day is designated to recognize and appreciate the value of that little rubber thingy that sits atop our pencils. When one makes a mistake, they are the big "cover-up", oops, make that eraser, of our faux pax (I prefer to call them a booboo). Just imagine how messy our documents would be without it!

Why not just call it "Eraser Day"? Well, there are two reasons. The first is erasers were made of rubber. Today, they are made of rubber, or vinyl.  Secondly, in Great Britain, they are formally called "rubbers". I am thinking they should be called eradicators, what do you think???

In the world of erasers, two men are prominent. Joseph PriestleyPencil discovered the eraser in 1770, using pieces of rubber imported from Brazil. Then in 1858, Hyman Lipman of Philadelphia, Pa., patented the pencil with an eraser at the end.  Oh thank you Hyman the schools are a better place since this invention.
Today's Quote: To err is human, an eraser is divine!

Something to Ponder: When will they put one on the pencil used to keep score in golf????

Oh my goodemess. It seems that there is a day for everything! And I like the word "eradicator" too!

An eraser in golf might be too big of temptation for some Don. Probably why it's not there. Some should have to use ink. lol

I am not sure kids even know what an eraser is now days.  My Grand daughter uses pen even in the 3rd grade.

I used many of these every year. lol

Good afternoon Richard,

You would be surprised at all the different days there are.  It makes me wonder who would have ever thought about doing them.

I stopped using a pencil and in the process lowered my golf score to +15.  It was amazing how good I got after not worrying about my score on paper.

I am thinking that we could lower school costs if they would just go to an E reader for their books and tests and homework.  Look at all the $$ that could be saved.

Hi Don - Do you remember the eraser getting black?  We then rubbed it under the desk to clean it off.  I wondered if that is still done?

Howdy and morning to you Don

Don, just my luck to go off and miss out on such a fun day. I sure do think you came up with a mighty fine re-name for them.

Have a good one

Don, I love it that you thought you'd made a mistake, but that was a mistake.  Nice to learn all about erasers here on Active Rain.
